📋 What We Collect
JustPath collects only what's needed to give you legal guidance. Here's exactly what that means:
- Your legal question — The text you type into the triage form. This is the main input for your AI analysis.
- Your email address — Only if you provide it to receive your results. We do not require an account to use the free triage.
- Your location — Optional. Helps us recommend local legal aid resources and attorneys near you.
- Uploaded documents — Optional. If you attach a PDF, image, or document, we extract the text for AI analysis only.
- Usage data — Anonymous session information (browser type, pages visited) to understand how people use the service and improve it.
Bottom line: We don't collect your name, phone number, address, or any government-issued IDs. We don't use your data to build profiles.
🤖 How We Use It
Your data is used for two purposes only:
- AI Legal Analysis — Your legal question (and any document text) is sent to our AI system to generate personalized guidance, statute citations, and resource recommendations.
- Usage Tracking — To enforce the free tier (1 question per email) and understand aggregate service usage. This helps us keep the lights on.
AI Processing Note: Your legal question is processed by an AI model to generate guidance. This processing happens through OpenAI's API. We do not use your data to train AI models.
💾 Storage & How Long We Keep It
This is where it gets important — the retention rules are different based on whether you sign up:
Anonymous Users (no account):
- Your legal question and email are stored to deliver your results and track your free question usage.
- Uploaded documents are processed in memory — they are not permanently stored after your session ends.
- After your session, your data remains in our database for up to 30 days, then is automatically deleted.
Subscribers (paid account):
- Your data is retained for as long as your account is active to provide ongoing service.
- You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time.
- After account deletion, data is removed within 30 days.
🔗 Third-Party Services We Use
JustPath uses a small number of external services to function. Here's who they are and why they're involved:
- OpenAI — Powers the AI analysis of your legal question. Your question is sent to OpenAI's API for processing. OpenAI does not use this data to train models.
- Stripe — Handles payment processing when you subscribe. We never store your credit card number — Stripe handles that on their secure infrastructure.
- Cloudflare R2 — Stores uploaded documents for signed-in subscribers. Anonymous user uploads are never stored permanently.
- Render — Hosts the JustPath application servers. Your data passes through their infrastructure during processing.
These are the only third parties with access to your data, and they are used only for the specific purpose listed above.
🚫 What We Don't Do
- We don't sell your data. Ever. Your information is never used for advertising, profiling, or shared with data brokers.
- We don't share your legal question with anyone — not even the attorneys in our directory. Your question is between you and the AI.
- We don't use your data to train AI models. Your legal questions are not used to improve our AI system.
- We don't track you across the internet. We use minimal session-based tracking to understand service usage, not to follow you across sites.
- We don't store credit card numbers. All payment processing goes through Stripe's secure, PCI-compliant infrastructure.
✅ Your Rights
You have full control over your data. You can:
- Request deletion — Contact us to delete your account and all associated data.
- Access your data — Ask us what data we have on file and we'll show you.
- Opt out of tracking — You can use the service without analytics tracking. Contact us for details.
- Cancel anytime — Subscribers can cancel their subscription at any time. Your data is deleted within 30 days of account closure.
🍪 Cookies & Session Data
JustPath uses cookies only for essential functionality:
- Session cookie — Keeps you logged in if you create an account. This is required for the service to function.
- Analytics cookie — Anonymous session ID to count triage completions. No personal data, no cross-site tracking.
We don't use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or any form of cross-site tracking. The Meta Pixel on our site tracks page views and conversion events for advertising measurement only — it does not enable Meta to track you across other websites.
👶 Children Under 13
JustPath is not designed for or directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, contact us immediately and we will delete it.
🔄 Changes to This Policy
If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date below and — for significant changes — notify you via email if you have an account. Minor changes (formatting, clarifications) may be made without notice.
